What is a Pinched Nerve?

A pinched nerve is a lay person’s term for compression, constriction or stretching of a nerve.

Subluxation: The Cause of a Pinched Nerve

In chiropractic terms, a pinched nerve describes nerve interference from a subluxation. When the body is not in proper alignment, nerves can become trapped, compressed and stretched. The pressure exerted on the nerves produces dysfunction of the nerves and characteristic symptoms.

The Symptoms of a Pinched Nerve

Subluxation produces interference with normal function of nerves. When nerves are compressed or stretched from misalignment of the surrounding bones, they become irritated, inflammed, and/or atrophied. These changes to the nerve cause it to misfire, producing abnormal sensations that we describe as symptoms. In reality, symptoms are our body’s way of telling us that something is wrong. It is best not to ignore the symptoms of a pinched nerve.

These are the most common symptoms of a pinched nerve:

The Silent Symptoms of a Pinched Nerve

Often, patients only associate pain, tingling or numbness with a pinched nerve. However, a pinched nerve can produce symptoms other than pain. Think about if the nerve that is being pinched goes to the intestines or colon; colitis, constipation or irritable bowel syndrome may be the result. What if the irritated nerve goes to the stomach; poor digestion, heartburn and acid reflux may occur. Asthma is often associated with subluxation.

The Health Consequences of a Pinched Nerve

Given that nerves control every function in our body, pinching a nerve can have far reaching health effects. Changes in immune system function like allergies and poor immunity leading to getting sick easier or a “poor constitution” are possible. Changes in hormone function can result producing conditions such as: changes in thyroid function, infertility, PMS, depression, fibromyalgia, and difficult menopause. Neurologic changes that you might overlook from a pinched nerve can include heart arrhythmia or palpitations, migraines, ADD/ADHD and dizziness or vertigo.

Because your body has enough nerves within it to circle the globe 2.5 times, the multitude of possible health problems associated with a pinched nerve are too many to list! But, you get the idea, healthy nerves are a key to health and subluxations, or pinched nerves, are a key to sickness, disease and dysfunction:
