What is a Chiropractic Adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is the means by which a Doctor of Chiropractic corrects a spinal subluxation.

The Goal of the Adjustment: Restore Health

When the spine is subluxated, the bones of the spine, called vertebra, are out of normal alignment and are unable to glide and move freely. This produces tension in the nerves that exit the spine between each of the spinal bones. Over time, inflammation, irritation and nerve interference result; creating pain, dysfunction and disease.

Chiropractic Adjustments Correct Subluxation

Using principles of physics, the misalignment of the spine or joints is corrected by using a gentle, specific force over a specific lever on the vertebra to unlock the vertebral bone from its improper position and allow it to return naturally to proper alignment and function. Nerve function is restored over time and nerve interference is reduced or eliminated depending on the original severity of the subluxation.

Types of Chiropractic Adjustments

There are many different types of chiropractic adjustments. There are hands-on adjustments that sometimes produce an audible “pop”. The sound has nothing to do with the quality of the correction. The sound is merely gas within the spinal joint expanding. Excellent corrections can have no sound at all.

There are many low force and non-force adjustments that sometimes use an instrument to make the correction. These types of adjustments usually do not produce a popping sound.

Chiropractic Adjustments are Safe and Effective

The bottom line is that chiropractic adjustments are gentle and effective in restoring health and chiropractic is safe.  Even the most fragile members of our society such as senior citizens, newborn babies and pregnant mothers have all benefited from chiropractic care.
