Sacroiliac joint pain and pelvic pain are common conditions in both men and women. The onset of the pain can be sudden or acute, or the pain can begin slowly over time and occur chronically. Either way, chiropractic care is most beneficial in relieving pain in the sacroiliac joints and pelvis. Let’s take a look at how and why this pain happens.
The Anatomy of the Sacroiliac Joints and Pelvic Ring
The pelvis is comprised of three bones: the sacrum, which is the triangular bone at the base of the low back or lumbar spine, and the left and right iliac bones. Together, these three bones form the pelvic ring.
Sacroiliac Joint Pain and Pelvic Ring Dysfunction
When the joint between the sacrum and ilium becomes misaligned, or subluxated, a painful condition called sacroiliac joint dysfunction occurs. When subluxation of the joint between the pubic bones in the front of the pelvic ring occurs, painful pelvic ring dysfunction is often the result.
The Most Common Complaint from Sacroiliac Subluxation
Symptoms of Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction and Pelvic Ring Dysfunction
- Back pain
- Lower back pain
- Pain in the buttocks
- Hip pain
- Groin pain
- Leg pain
- Pelvic pain
- Tailbone pain
Sacroiliac pain and pelvic pain is usually caused by subluxation. The larger question is what caused the subluxation? The answer is usually trauma, postural changes, sports or pregnancy.
- Trauma: falls, accidents or blows to the pelvis can cause subluxation.
- Postural Changes: increased abdominal size, muscle imbalances in the legs, pelvis and lower back, and short leg syndrome can cause subluxation.
- Sports: Some athletic activities can place a lot of pressure on the joints of the pelvis or cause repeated use or overuse. A few examples are golf, running, figure skating and horseback riding.
- Pregnancy: Hormonal changes during pregnancy cause laxity of the ligaments supporting the bones of the pelvis and are a frequent cause of subluxation, as well as, carrying the sheer load of a pregnancy over nine months!
